Tuscany 7 Day Sailing Itinerary

Piombino Yacht Charter
Piombino with Elba in the distance

Our Recommended Tuscany 7 Day Sailing Itinerary including Elba, Macinaggio Corsica, and Porto Azurro

You have tremendous options for a sailing charter in the Tuscan Archipelago, all that will romance you with the food, weather, wine, coastline, and culture of the Tuscan Archipelago. You can head all the way to Corsica and back if you love sailing the open waters, or you can simply hop around the coast and island of Elba exploring quiet coves and beautiful historic towns. A week is not a lot of time, so our recommendation on all charters is to not try to be too aggressive in the itinerary, and of course closely watch the weather forecast to make sure you don't sail into bad weather.

That said, here is a Tuscany sailing itinerary that will give you a deep appreciation for all that is the Tuscan Archipelago.

DAY 1: Piombino, Punta Ala or Cala de' Medici

Punta Ala
Punta Ala

Depending on where your charter sailing yacht is based, depart from Piombino, Punta Ala or Cala de' Medici. Stay the first night in the harbor or a close-by cove, finish your provisioning, and enjoy the delightful Tuscan town before your early sail tomorrow!

DAY 2: Elba: Golfo Della Biodola and Portoferraio (30nm)

Portoferraio
Portoferraio

Big sail today, as you're heading to the historic and beautiful island of Elba! There are several destinations to choose from but you may want to first stop at the beautiful Golfo Della Biodola on the north side of the island for a swim and to go ashore for a walk and shopping. Then head to the port of Portoferraio and explore the old town. History buffs may want to visit Napolean's residences of Villa Dei Mulini and Villa San Martino, from where he ruled the island during his 9-month exile from France.

DAY 3: Capraia (26nm)

Capraia
Capraia Harbor

Capraia is a pretty volcanic island to the north-west of Elba. Sailors often stop here on their way to or returning from Corsica. Capraia once was home to wild goats and has only recently become a tourist destination, so it is largely unspoiled and life is much as it used to be. Capraia has good marina facilities you may require now that you know your boat and plenty of local fish restaurants, bars, and pizzerias. Explore the island, and head to the pretty bay of Cala del Ceppo for a swim and snorkel.

DAY 4: Corsica: Macinaggio (20nm) and possibly Bastia

Sail across to the French island of Corsica. At the north tip of the peninsula, you will arrive at the small beach town of Macinaggio. You will find a beautiful, unspoiled beach with clear blue waters. This area of Corsica is largely uninhabited and you will be surrounded by nature. You also have a good chance of spotting a whale or dolphins on your sail.

Bastia Corsica
Bastia Port

If you want to visit a Corsican city, head directly south to Bastia (20nm), a bustling port town that is quintessentially Corsican. You will find plenty of amazing restaurants, Corsican wine and Cheese, and several provisioning stores.

DAY 5: Elba: Lacona and Golfo Stella (30nm)

Lacona
Beach near Lacona

Heading back to Elba, this time on the south side. Head to the bay of Golfo Stella, with the main town of Lacona, which offers Lido Beach and several beach restaurants.

If you don't want to sail all the way to Elba, consider heading to the island of Pianosa.

DAY 6: Elba: Porto Azurro (14nm)

Porto Azurro
Porto Azurro

Short sail today to the next bay over, Porto Azurro. This lovely Elban town offers a choice of anchorages or a small marina. The town has many restaurants, bars, and ice cream shops. Enjoy exploring the alleys and small streets filled with shops or stop for a cold drink and soak up the atmosphere of this lively town.  Make sure you visit Piazza Matteotti, one of the prettiest town squares in Italy.

DAY 7: Return to Piombino or Punta Ala (20nm)

Spend your final day enjoying the town and sampling the local food and wine!
